Good Time To Move In HRIS?

​I’m addressing a question that’s been asked a lot recently as with the current pandemic, there’s a lot of uncertainty. I’m mindful that I’ve been highlighting the HRIS market a lot recently. What the market looks like and how it’s moved etc. I haven’t really talked about what this means from a candidate perspective, however. This short write-up is directed at those who are potentially unhappy in their current role in the HRIS/iTrent/ResourceLink markets. Those who were maybe thinking about moving before lockdown but stayed for the security (which I totally understand).

The only way I can answer this is by evaluating the past 4 months. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who decided to “jump ship” during this unusual time and to be totally honest, there have been no regrets. It seems these people put their careers and futures ahead of the “risk” that associates itself with moving jobs. Since then, it seems it was the best thing for them to do, both mentally and career-wise.​


Truth be told, there’s never really a right time to move. If you are on the fence about moving, the likelihood is that you will always make an excuse when “it get’s real”. “It doesn’t feel right”. “I don’t like the iTrent consultant job title.” “The salary doesn’t reflect what I need” (although it’s paying more and on your doorstep). I’ve heard them all. These are usually the candidates that when an offer is made, they’re happy. However, when their current employer comes back offering more money, they jump at it. Ultimately this leads to coming back to us in the next 6 months to say they have made the wrong decision.​

Don’t get me wrong, I know how uncomfortable it can be to move positions. Getting to know new people, being thrown out of your comfort zone and even preparing for interviews, there’s always a sense of “betrayal” to those who are on the fence.

The best advice I can give to people who want to know about what the HRIS market is like and if it is a good time to move is to ask yourself where you see yourself in 12 months’ time. If that is:

  • Happy in your current role

  • Potential progression opportunities 

  • Another 12 months’ experience would help your career growth

then I’d say it’s probably good you stick it out and get that HRIS experience under your belt. If it’s any different, the market welcomes it at the moment. Although things have changed recently, job stability is different. This is also a great time to get your feet through the door in a great new company. There is potential to work remotely for a company that reward you for your work and will recognise that you are key member of the team.
